This is the glitziest new kid on the New Forest block. Among the wooded trails and wild horses of this glorious slice of England, it is a noveau-Georgian mansion (there is an original Regency section to the building, but it has been mostly swallowed up) with carved-out spaces of measured prettiness: rooms like polished still-life’s with arresting contemporary paintings and artfully arranged objects, and a staircase lined with gilt-framed oils. In the beautiful breakfast room, with its painted timber floors, rows of white china are broken up by the occasional dash of blue, and the gardens are trimmed into submission. Set in 96 acres, this is country-house living for the urbane interior-design-inclined – and that includes the bedrooms and suites with marble bathrooms. The highlight is the ‘serious forest food’ from the area, but don’t leave without a massage at the new herb-house spa.
