We like...the perfect location, poised between pony-grazed moors and the New Forest’s most splendid woodland. This one-year-old nails the ‘21st- century country house’ feel it aims for, and its brand-new spa, The Herb House, is among Britain’s biggest – everything is on a grand scale – and decked out in the same cosy-but-cool style as the main house. The rooftop herb garden is a fragrant treat whatever the season.
We don’t like... not being able to glide back to your room in robe and slippers. The spa is in a new building, which is not joined on to the rest of the hotel.
Best Treatment: Anything that involves the hydrotherapy pool – so decadently huge and beautifully done in local slate, it feels like something from ancient Rome. And it has a view straight out onto the forest.
